Why would you do this

On GG I came across with the following on their Whois

Play Prefs: 3 points only and dont double.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't want to use the cube, but if you don't the
client has the ability to play matches without the cube.

Thought it to be odd.

Why would someone do that? hhmmm... maybe they have no
faith in their ability to figure out drop/accept? Just a
thought, but I'm not sure I'd want to play a multi-point
match without the cube.

I was playing another player in a 5 point match and it was my roll.
I considered the double, taking into account match score, pip count,
threats, position etc. etc. and was asked ?

I said I was considering doubling that's why I was delaying the roll. To
which he said, oh yeah, but it's just a yes/no decision!! I just WISH it
was that easy!!

I made the right choice according to Snowie in analysis afterwards. Glad
I didn't rush it.

In many parts of the world (the Middle East especially), the game is not
played with a doubling cube; all games are played to completion. Granted, I
find the cube a critically important part of the game, but this player may
enjoy backgammon but not want to use the cube, which he finds confusing or
irritating. Gammons and BGs count in this style, but no doubling.) And
GamesGrid does give you the opportunity to set the match so the cube is not
in play.

The cube is a relatively new idea in the history of backgammon. My
understanding is that in some European countries, the cube is not
commonly used. They probably think we are odd for using it. :)

I may be wrong in this, but I believe there are some countries where
gammons count, but backgammons do not.

In Turkey people play backgammon (tavla for them) and they don't use the
cube. Perhaps there are turlkish people on this server? They don't use cups
and they through very small dice with the fingers. Also if i get 5 and you 2
at the first through I don't play 52 but I through dice one more time and I
may begin even with 66, 55, ...

I play regularly when I visit the Middle East (against Jordanians, Lebanese
and Syrians). The main differences compared to play in the UK (my home)
are:

1. no doubling cube;

2. no gambling or money play;

3. tournament play is similar, matches played to 5, 7, 11, etc. with gammons
and backgammons counting as 2 or 3 points respectively;

4. the player throwing the higher dice on the opening roll of the first game
has the option of re-throwing both dice and using the re-thrown dice for
his/her opening move

5. the winner of the last game always has the first roll in the next game;

6. when the dice lands flat on a checker it is not considered cocked and the
dice are not re-thrown;

7. dice cups are not used although but the dice must be thrown against the
wall of the board (which are always wooden);

8. the dice are much smaller, less than a quarter inch; and

9. speed is a major factor in the game. My opponents invariably complain if
I play at UK pace.
